The 109-room Hotel Josef in Prague?s old town is a study in understatement and seamless transition? it isn?t me rely a slick interior renovation of a centuries old building. Eva Jiricna, who has raised eyebrows with her innovative interior designs in London, Paris and New York, created two buildings around a peaceful landscaped courtyard that gives the hotel a clear focus and point of orientation.

Invigorating contrasts abound in the hotel?s public spaces, to name but one example the stark steel and glass central staircase contrasts beautifully with the calming limestone prevalent in the reception area and bar. Guestrooms at the Josef are designed with a similar efficiency that pervades the rest of the hotel. Classy, functional elements such as the rooms' lacquered finishes are offset by warmer design influences, including relaxed limestone floors.
